Recently, a Tesla Model Y camouflaged has been photographed in Palo Alto, California, sparking plenty of curiosity. If you’re familiar with Tesla’s approach, you’ll know the company often stays tight-lipped about new updates. However, sightings of camouflaged Tesla Model Y units have increased, suggesting something is in the works.
What makes these camouflaged sightings even more intriguing is the extensive coverings on the rear of the vehicle. It’s not just a one-off either, as similar units have been spotted throughout the Bay Area over the past few months. Could this be the “Juniper” update for the Tesla Model Y that’s been rumoured since early 2023?

Despite Elon Musk’s public dismissal of the idea, the frequency of these camouflaged Model Y sightings can’t be ignored. It’s hard not to speculate that these might be early prototypes of the highly-anticipated Juniper update. The Model 3 recently received a significant “Highland” update, featuring changes to both the interior and exterior. Given that the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 share many components, it would make sense for the Y to follow suit.
The Tesla Model Y camouflaged in Palo Alto didn’t just have the rear covered, it was a full attempt at hiding potential updates. Spotted in the tech hub of California, it’s likely part of Tesla’s extensive testing. A leaked spy shot suggested that the rear of the updated Model Y may feature a red light bar with “TESLA” emblazoned across it, which would give the Model Y a sleeker, more modern look.

Tesla’s approach to vehicle updates is notoriously secretive, and it’s possible these camouflaged Model Y units are part of ongoing tests for features Tesla wants to keep under wraps for as long as possible. However, given that these sightings are becoming more frequent, it does feel like something big is coming soon. The camouflaged Tesla Model Y spotted in Palo Alto may be the closest we get to a confirmation.
While Musk has dismissed rumours of a refresh this year, it’s hard to ignore the patterns. With the Model 3 receiving its re-engineering, it would only be logical for Tesla to roll out something similar for the Model Y.
